The Education in Ancient Rome

When You rent an apartment in Rome, during Your stay in the Eternal City, You'll realize the greatness of Rome thanks to the many archaeological wonders that you can visit in the town.

Education, like many other aspects of life of the Romans, was linked to social class. Less well-off families could not afford to study their children, then, from early childhood, they devote themselves to work in the fields. However, in general, children learn the concepts necessary to the life of every day, especially relating to agriculture and livestock.

From the wealthiest families, the children were initiated by the father, reading, writing, grammar, arithmetic and history. These was the fundamental concepts, functional to everyday life and inspired by the famous Roman pragmatism. The story was passed down orally from father to son. The poem was not studied, nor were the Latin poets, if anything, within the patrician families, the boys learned the greek and the Greek lyric. Scarce notions of medicine:
the diseases, according to the ancient Romans, were caused by the gods, so they had to go for the cure! When not studying, the boys went to work in the fields, following the path of their ancestors. The formation of the boy completed in the army. At the age of sixteen the boys were called upon to provide, for several years, service in the army, indispensable to access to public career.

These streets were named mainly with the names of censors and consuls who realized it.

It was not so expensive to build these roads because Rome soldiers were employed to build them. The consuls and censors deciding when and where to build a road and this was accomplished with very high standards for it to last forever ...

The Roman emperor

When You rent an apartment in Rome, during Your stay in the Eternal City, You'll realize the greatness of Rome thanks to the many archaeological wonders that you can visit in the town.

The Roman emperor is the head of the Roman state from 27 BC, when the Senate gave Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus the agnomen of Augustus. The term derives from the Latin "imperator", the title was originally full of religious meaning and subsequently awarded to victorious generals and contains within it the reference to the Imperium. Starting from Julius Caesar that title to be added, as praenomen, to the personal name of the most powerful man in Rome. The emperor was supreme ruler of Rome and supreme commander of the Roman legions and it emphasises the strong links between the ruler and the army (on whose support the ruler's power depended), and does not discriminate between the style of rule in different phases of the Empire.
The first emperor ruled Rome after years of fighting between rival leaders. His name was Octavian. He took a new name, Augustus, when he became Emperor in 27 B.C. Augustus brought peace after years of fighting. The Emperor had a troop of special soldiers to protect him. They were called the Praetorian Guard.

Walking Tour of the Imperial Fora, the Trajan's Markets and the Colosseum

You will meet the English-speaking guide in Piazza Venezia. The tour of Ancient Rome begins with the visit of the marvellous Imperial Fora. The Imperial forums of Rome are one of the most famous Roman monuments in the world. During Your stay here in the Eternal City You’ll meet tourists from all 5 continents.

The Imperial Forums are the enlargement of the Roman forums; this extension was necessary because the then existing forums were not big enough to absorb the number of visitors but also to give more importance to the social, financial and political centre of the Caput Mundi. The Imperial Forums consist of the Trajan’s markets, the Trajan’s Forum, the Forum of Augustus and the Forum of Caesar. The Trajan markets were created in the beginning of the 2nd century A.D. and served as a state magazine for food and as a place for its distribution and sale. The Trajan's Forum is the youngest and largest of the Imperial forums and consisted of a rectangular space, in whose centre stood an equestrian statue that showed Trajan.

The Forum of Augustus is bounded by a wall of tuff and Peperin, to delineate it from the Quarters of the population of Subura, a roman district. The place of the forum was framed by two rows of pillars, at the end stood the majestic temple of Mars Ultor. The Forum of Caesar was the first of the Imperial Fora and consisted of a rectangular space which was circumstanced with rows of pillars. In the West, the place was bounded by the Temple of Venus Genetrix, the mother of Aeneas, ancestor of the Julian dynasty. The Forum of Nerva (also called Transitorium - Transitional Forum) was begun by the Domitian and inaugurated of his successor, the Emperor Nerva, after his death. It consists of a long and narrow space, which is surrounded by a colonnade from Peperin blocks and which concludes with the entrance to the temple of the goddess Minerva. The Forum of Piece was created in the 71 AD by the Emperor Vespasian, to celebrate the Peace after the Civil War and to commemorate the end of the war against the Jews. At the end of the Via dei Fori Imperiali you will find the Coliseum, the greatest wonder of Roman civilization. The ancient splendour of the amphitheatre can still be admired thanks to its imposing remains.

They were Jewish prisoners, who built this immense Amphitheatre, whose true name is the “Flavian Amphitheatre” (it was commonly called the Coliseum because of its vicinity to the Colossus of Nero). The Coliseum became the symbol of Rome and their habitants; there is hardly a page of the history, which isn’t connected in some way to the Amphitheatre. The tour will end at the Circus Maximus.

Romolo and Remo and the Foundation of Rome

When You rent an apartment in Rome, during Your stay in the Eternal City, You'll realize the greatness of Rome thanks to the many archaeological wonders that you can visit in the town.

Romolo and Remo are, in the tradition of Roman mythology, twin brothers, one of whom, Romulus, was the eponymous founder of Rome and its first king. The founding date is given by tradition to 21 April 753 BC (also called Christmas in Rome and day Palila). According to legend, they were sons of Mars and Rhea Silvia (or "Rhea Silvia"), descendants of Aeneas.
This story has always been deemed as a fable dating back to the period between the fourth and third centuries BC. For many critics the city of Rome was actually founded only one hundred and fifty years later, at the time of King Tarquinius (late seventh century BC). However, on the Palatine hill, during the exploratory work, it was found the Lupercale, a local underground of Roman times, roughly 15 meters away from the foundations of the villa of Augustus. This structure could then be identified with the cave where the two legendary sons of Mars and Rhea Silvia, were suckled by the legendary wolf.
